With Justin Townes Earle's pedigree come mixed blessings. As the son of legendary singer/songwriter Steve Earle, high expectations are the name of the game, and he's shown that he is up to the task on The Good Life, crafting stark portraits and narrative tales with elements of blues, classic country and rock n'roll. A modern-day troubadour, Earle blends genres seamlessly, framing his songs in warm musical settings and creating tunes that could easily be mistaken for classics. “I started out to make an old timey country record, but I listen to so many other kinds of music,” Justin explained. “Some of the songs were rearranged on the spot and took on other lives and album is now more of an exploration of southern music.” Earle approaches universal topics like traveling and matters of the heart (“Hard Living”, “The Good Life”) with the same fervor with which he evokes the bleak loneliness of a Civil War soldier on “Lone Pine Hill”.
With inspirations as diverse as Townes Van Zandt (he was named in honor of the elder Earle's hero), Jimmy Reed, Kurt Cobain, The Replacements, Ray Charles and The Pogues, Justin forged his own brand of American roots music. Going through life with a namesake of Van Zandt's stature cannot be easy for a young songwriter, but Earle takes it in stride,” saying, “Anyone who tries to live up to Van Zandt is a fool. I'm honored to carry the name, but if I spent my life trying to live up to it, I'd have a pretty miserable life.” Likewise, his father's incredibly acclaimed, prolific career casts a huge shadow, but Justin Townes Earles makes a name for himself by focusing his writing on the personal rather than the political, narrative tales instead of protest. The Good Life melds the qualities of a short story with the lyrical acuity of excellent songs, celebrating grand southern traditions and blowing a fresh breeze across the musical gardens and dive bars of Nashville.

Joe Henry, highly esteemed songwriter, producer and teller of tales is visiting Australia in early 2009 as part of the Sydney Festival, where he will perform three concerts, plus two shows in Victoria. Joe will be joined at each show by the accomplished double bassist David Piltch.

In a career spanning more than 20 years, Henry has left a unique imprint on American popular music.  As a songwriter and artist, by turns dark, devastating, and hopeful, he draws an author’s eye for the overlooked detail across a broad swath of American musical styles – rock, jazz and blues – rendering genre modifiers useless. On his own albums, Henry has collaborated with many remarkable American artists, including Don Cherry, T Bone Burnett, Victoria Williams, The Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and Marc Perlman, guitarists Page Hamilton, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot, Daniel Lanois, Jakob Dylan, and even Ornette Coleman in a rare appearance for the jazz icon.
Henry’s most recent album is 2007’s Civilians, his tenth record, which landed on many year-end “best of” lists and has been hailed as one of the artist’s finest works. Billboard magazine for example said, “Henry's superb Civilians succeeds not only as a melodic collection of poignant short stories, but also as a potent picture book of America gone wrong.”
But Joe Henry is a man with many talents. As an album producer, Henry’s influence has shaped the sound of iconoclastic artists including Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint, Ani DiFranco, Bettye LaVette, and Aimee Mann.  In 2003, he earned a Grammy Award for his production role on Solomon Burke’s astonishing comeback record Don’t Give Up On Me,
And what might you need to know about the incomparable David Piltch? As a renowned double bassist, Piltch is the tasteful player of choice and general musical collaborator for the likes of k.d. lang and Holly Cole among others.  There are few who can walk the line between jazz, Americana, art pop and friendly experimentalism quite like David Piltch.
So it needn’t be emphasized further – this concert by Joe Henry and David Piltch will feature serious substance for fine music lovers, an unmissable evening you can’t afford to let pass you by! Except, did I mention that we are importing a baby grand piano for Joe to perform on at Meeniyan.

VENUE SPECS AS OF OCTOBER 2007

Location: Meeniyan Town Hall is located in the centre of the town of Meeniyan, on the South Gippsland Highway, Victoria. It is approx. 2hrs from the Melbourne CBD.

Seating Capacity: Up to 300. The usual format for our events is table and chair seating, table sizes varying from 4 – 10. Most events are BYO drinks and nibbles.

Disability Access: Full disability access – discount price upon application

Children: Children are welcome to most events and discount prices are available upon application.

Meeniyan Inhouse Production:

Stage: Size 8m x 5m. Access at street level, with 4 steps onto stage. Stage elevation: 1metre.
CAR access to back and side of building

Backstage: Large room with open fire, fully equipped kitchen from where home cooked gourmet
