Wagons

&

Suzannah Espie & The Last Word

Members / Concession $25  Adults $30

Two Melbourne based musicians have just released new albums that have the critics raving, so we will be presenting both as a special treat for you on the same night!

We have had the pleasure of Henry Wagons, his deep voice, his sense of humour and spellbinding songwriting talents as a support at Meeniyan before, so it is overdue to experience Henry with his full band of equally talented and humorous musicians (which includes Steve Hassett from LULUC who was also here recently as support for Eric Bibb).
So store some canned food in the basement, tie up your horses, and make your way underground 'cause Wagons have just released their fourth album, The Rise and Fall of Goodtown. And to celebrate its release, Wagons will be bringing The Goodtown Roadshow to Meeniyan.

Wagons will deliver an extravaganza worthy of any weather-beaten Vegas stage or temporary pontoon on a boiling swamp as they launch their fourth album.

Mixed and co-produced by electronic wonderkid Cornel Wilczek (Qua), The Rise and Fall of Goodtown is a ride through contrasting music territory that will both satisfy and confound expectation.  Casting their net wider than ever before, Wagons move from songs covered in sweat from the nose pads of Roy Orbison's glasses, to the leafy stench only found in the late part of a Creedence gig, all the way to the heart-clutching of Cash's funeral balladry. Lead by the ever ominous presence and booming baritone of song writing mastermind, Henry Wagons, this will be an album launch tour like no other.

An added bonus on the night is that Susannah Espie and her band will also be gracing the Meeniyan stage. Suzannah first came to the public's attention when she toured as part of the all girl vocal delight that was GIT. Today Suzannah and her band, The Last Word, combine blues, soul and country influences: Suzannah has been proclaimed by critics far and wide as 'Australia's Queen of Country Soul'.

"One of the most beautifully played, sung and produced albums I've heard - it's glorious" Rob Hirst, Midnight Oil
"This stunning album heralds Espie's arrival as a true solo star" Jo Roberts, The Age EG.

Augie March

&

Gareth Liddiard & Dan Luscombe (The Drones)

Our first chance to see one of Australia's premier bands in South Gippsland and our last chance to see them before they take a break.

Members / Concession $35 Adults $40 (+ $2 bkg fee)

sold out

For the past 13 years Melbourne band Augie March have achieved what very few bands, indeed artists in any field in Australia, can claim to have achieved. While steadily building a loyal and ferocious fan base, they have simultaneously sustained critical acclaim and commercial viability.
This year has seen the completion of two very successful and very different tours on the back of the release of their fourth LP “Watch Me Disappear”. The most recent, titled “On The Quiet” was a sellout, a rare presentation of the band stripped back and swinging, a revelation for many in the audience who perhaps had always heard the music but never realised it was 5 human beings with sticks and strings making it come about.

In contrast this winter, Augie March will don full regalia and take the garden of forking paths into their own schizophrenic past where minotaur’s with broken hearts hold up the front bar, manic pixies bore repeatedly into the necks of corporate swindlers, and the human condition gets ridden roughshod by rabid monkeys into an unthinkable tomorrow. Plus there may be a love song or two. Watch Me Set My Strange Sun You Bloody Choir will be a trip down memory lane for Augie fans because all four albums will have an equal showing on this grand tour.

For their final large-scale tour for 2009, Augie March will be hitting the bitumen in the company of Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe of the phenomenal outfit The Drones. Great friends for many years and fellow travelers on the arduous, terribly unfashionable, and yet rewarding long road. It is a dream pairing for anyone who likes their coffee dark and strong with a dash of firewater. Both bands have seen the snake eat its own tail more than a few times and have forged on with a gritted tooth smile regardless. In an acoustic setting these chaps will shine every night.

Apart from the odd festival this will be the last chance to see Augie March doing what they do before they take a well-earned breather. In their time off there may well be a solo album or two and some time given to projects in film, photography, claymation and other interests. In the meantime we invite you to one of the tours of 2009, from your own country, no evidence required, no gimmicks in the songbox, Augie March.

And they responded by giving you some exceptional performances.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers that made the day happen and then pulled it off in the rain and the mud: The Lyrebird, Prom Caost and Mirboo North Arts Council volunteers, our wonderfrul MC Mr Brian Wise, the amazing sound crew, Gary Yeomans, Ray the mini skip man, APEX volunteers, Leongatha Scouts, Berry's Creek CFA and the inspiring O'Loughlin family. Saturday 12th May

Ash Grunwald

It is too simplistic to describe Ash Grunwald as just a blues musician. While it's true that his music is steeped in the delta blues tradition of the legendary acoustic musicians who proliferated in pre-World War Two America's deep South and the giants of electric blues who shaped rock and roll, it's the young Victorian's willingness to combine these influences with grooves and sounds common in contemporary music that sets him apart.
